On December 21, 1968, three men sat atop 6.2 million pounds of thrust and waited for someone to light the fuse. Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and Bill Anders were about to do something no human being had ever done. They were going to leave Earth orbit, travel a quarter of a million miles through empty space, and circle the Moon.
Apollo 8 is the forgotten Apollo mission. Everyone remembers Apollo 11: the landing, the footprint, the giant leap. Everyone remembers Apollo 13: the explosion, the survival, the movie starring Tom Hanks. But Apollo 8, the mission that made all of it possible, rarely gets the attention it deserves. And that is a shame, because in many ways it was the most daring and most consequential of them all.
The crew had trained for barely four months. The spacecraft had never been tested beyond Earth orbit. Nobody knew for certain whether the navigation would work, whether the engine would refire to bring them home, or whether prolonged exposure to deep space would affect the astronauts in unexpected ways. They went anyway.
Why the Rush?
To understand Apollo 8, you need to understand 1968. The year was a catastrophe. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in April. Robert Kennedy was killed in June. The Vietnam War was grinding on, protests were erupting across the country, and the Soviet Union appeared to be winning the space race.
The CIA had intelligence suggesting that the Soviets were preparing to send a cosmonaut around the Moon. Their Zond spacecraft had already completed unmanned circumlunar flights. If the Soviets got a human around the Moon first, it would be a devastating blow to the American space program and to national morale.
NASA’s original plan called for a cautious, step-by-step approach. Apollo 7 would test the command module in Earth orbit. Apollo 8 would test the lunar module in Earth orbit. Apollo 9 would combine both in a higher orbit. And so on, building up to a landing attempt around Apollo 12 or 13.
But in August 1968, a small group of NASA managers made a breathtaking decision. The lunar module was behind schedule. Rather than wait for it, they proposed sending Apollo 8 directly to the Moon, without a lunar module, with only the command and service modules. A pure circumlunar flight. It would test the navigation, the communications, the engine, and the human experience of deep space travel, all in one shot.
The risk was enormous. The potential reward was even greater.

The Journey Out

The launch, on the morning of December 21, went flawlessly.
After orbiting Earth twice to check systems, the crew performed translunar injection, firing the Saturn V’s third stage to accelerate from orbital velocity to the speed needed to reach the Moon. This was the moment of no return. Once that engine fired, they were committed. There was no quick abort, no easy way home. If something went wrong, the best option was to swing around the Moon using its gravity and hope the trajectory brought them back to Earth.
The journey to the Moon took about three days. During that time, the astronauts were farther from Earth than any human had ever been. They watched their home planet shrink from a massive presence filling the window to a small blue marble hanging in blackness. Jim Lovell later described the Earth as looking like “a grand oasis in the big vastness of space.”
Entering Lunar Orbit
On Christmas Eve morning, Apollo 8 swung behind the Moon and fired its service propulsion system engine to slow down and enter lunar orbit. This was the most nerve-wracking moment of the entire mission. The burn had to happen while the spacecraft was behind the Moon, out of radio contact with Houston. If the engine failed to fire, they would swing around the Moon and head back to Earth, uncomfortable but survivable. If the engine fired for the wrong duration, they could end up in a wildly wrong orbit, or crash into the lunar surface.
At Mission Control, the silence during the blackout was excruciating. Flight controllers stared at their screens and waited. When Lovell’s voice finally crackled through the static (“Go ahead, Houston, Apollo 8. Burn complete.”), the room erupted.
They were in orbit around the Moon. Humans were orbiting another world for the first time in history.
Earthrise
The crew spent 20 hours in lunar orbit, circling the Moon ten times. They photographed the lunar surface in detail, scouting potential landing sites for future missions. The far side of the Moon was desolate and cratered, a landscape of unrelenting gray.
And then, on the fourth orbit, something unexpected happened. As the spacecraft came around the limb of the Moon, Bill Anders looked out the window and saw the Earth rising above the lunar horizon.
“Oh my God, look at that picture over there,” Anders said. “There’s the Earth coming up. Wow, is that pretty.”
He grabbed a camera, a modified Hasselblad loaded with color film, and took a photograph. That image, known as Earthrise, became one of the most reproduced photographs in history. It showed the Earth, a fragile blue and white sphere, rising above the stark gray desolation of the lunar surface against the absolute black of space.
The photograph transformed humanity’s understanding of its own planet. For the first time, people could see their world as it truly was: small, beautiful, and alone. Wilderness photographer Galen Rowell called it “the most influential environmental photograph ever taken.” It is credited with helping to launch the modern environmental movement. The first Earth Day was held in April 1970, less than two years after Apollo 8.
Christmas Eve, 1968
On Christmas Eve, with an estimated one billion people watching on television (at the time, the largest audience in broadcast history), the crew of Apollo 8 did something nobody expected. They took turns reading from the Book of Genesis.
Bill Anders began: “In the beginning, God created the heaven and the Earth. And the Earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.”
Jim Lovell continued with the next four verses. Frank Borman read the final four, ending with: “And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.”
Then Borman added: “And from the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas, and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth.”
The broadcast is still, over half a century later, one of the most powerful moments in the history of television. It arrived at the end of a year that had been defined by violence, division, and despair. It gave millions of people a brief moment of wonder and unity. After the broadcast, a telegram arrived at NASA that read simply: “Thank you, Apollo 8. You saved 1968.”
Coming Home
The return journey was almost anticlimactic. The engine fired perfectly to break out of lunar orbit. The navigation was accurate. Re-entry was within a degree of the planned trajectory. Apollo 8 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on December 27, 1968, and the crew was recovered by the USS Yorktown.
The mission had accomplished everything it set out to do, and more. It proved that humans could travel to the Moon and return safely. It validated the navigation systems, the communication networks, and the Saturn V rocket. It provided detailed photography of lunar landing sites. And it produced an image, Earthrise, that changed how humanity saw itself.
The Mission That Made the Moon Landing Possible
Apollo 8 cleared the way for everything that followed. Apollo 9 tested the lunar module in Earth orbit. Apollo 10 performed a full dress rehearsal in lunar orbit. And then, on July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the Moon.
Jim Lovell would fly to the Moon again on Apollo 13, the mission that nearly ended in disaster when an oxygen tank exploded en route. Anders later reflected on the irony: “We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth.”
Frank Borman, a military pilot who would go on to run Eastern Airlines, was characteristically blunt about the mission’s place in history: “Apollo 8 was the one that mattered. We proved it could be done.”
He was right. Before Apollo 8, traveling to the Moon was a theoretical possibility. After it, it was an engineering problem with a known solution. The landing was inevitable once the journey had been made.
In the long history of human exploration, from Polynesian navigators crossing the Pacific to Magellan rounding the globe, Apollo 8 stands as one of the supreme achievements.
