When On the Origin of Species was published in 1859, Charles Darwin expected backlash. He got it. But he also got something he had not expected: a young German zoologist who would become his most enthusiastic, most prolific, and most controversial champion on the European continent.

Ernst Haeckel read Darwin’s book and it changed his life. Within a few years, he was not merely defending Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. He was extending it, popularizing it, and in some cases bending it in directions Darwin himself would not have chosen. Haeckel gave Darwinism a voice in Germany. He also gave it a face, producing hundreds of illustrations that made evolutionary ideas vivid and accessible to general audiences. And he gave it words: Haeckel coined the term “ecology” in 1866, along with dozens of other scientific terms still in use today.

He was brilliant, tireless, and often wrong. His story is inseparable from Darwin’s, and yet it also stands as a cautionary tale about what happens when scientific enthusiasm outpaces scientific caution.

The Convert

Haeckel was born in 1834 in Potsdam, Prussia. He studied medicine – his father’s wish – but his real passion was natural history. A research trip to the Mediterranean in the early 1860s, where he spent months studying marine invertebrates through a microscope, sealed his vocation. He became a zoologist at the University of Jena, where he would remain for his entire career.

His conversion to Darwinism was rapid and total. After reading the Origin, Haeckel began corresponding with Darwin, and the two developed a warm if sometimes uneasy relationship. Darwin appreciated Haeckel’s energy and his ability to reach German-speaking audiences. Haeckel revered Darwin as the greatest naturalist who had ever lived.

But their temperaments were opposites. Darwin was cautious, meticulous, and famously reluctant to speculate beyond his evidence. He sat on the theory of natural selection for twenty years before publishing, terrified of the controversy it would cause. Haeckel, by contrast, was bold, sweeping, and perfectly happy to speculate. Where Darwin hedged, Haeckel charged forward.

This difference would define both the power and the problems of Haeckel’s work.

The Words He Gave Us

Haeckel’s contributions to biological vocabulary are staggering. He coined or popularized an extraordinary number of terms that scientists still use daily:

  • Ecology – the study of organisms in relation to their environment, from the Greek oikos (household)
  • Phylum – the major taxonomic division of the animal kingdom
  • Phylogeny – the evolutionary history of a group of organisms
  • Ontogeny – the developmental history of an individual organism
  • Protista – the kingdom of single-celled eukaryotic organisms
  • Monera – the kingdom of prokaryotes (bacteria and archaea)
  • Stem cell (Stammzelle) – the undifferentiated cells from which specialized cells develop

The word “ecology” alone would be enough to secure Haeckel’s place in the history of science. He defined it in his 1866 work Generelle Morphologie der Organismen as “the whole science of the relations of the organism to the environment.” That definition still holds. Every time someone talks about an ecosystem, an ecological niche, or ecological balance, they are using a framework that Haeckel named.

He also drew the first phylogenetic tree – a branching diagram showing the evolutionary relationships among species. Darwin had sketched a rough tree in the Origin, but Haeckel produced elaborate, detailed trees that mapped the entire history of life as he understood it. These trees were speculative (many of the relationships he proposed turned out to be wrong), but the concept itself – visualizing evolution as a branching tree – became one of the most important ideas in biology.

Ontogeny Recapitulates Phylogeny

Of all Haeckel’s ideas, the one that made him most famous – and most controversial – was the biogenetic law: “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny.” In plain language, this means that an organism, as it develops from embryo to adult, passes through stages that resemble the adult forms of its ancestors.

A human embryo, for example, has structures that resemble gill slits. Haeckel argued that this was because our distant ancestors were fish, and the developing embryo literally replays its evolutionary history. The fish stage comes first, then the reptile stage, then the mammal stage, and finally the human form.

The idea was intoxicating in its elegance. It suggested that you could read the entire evolutionary history of a species just by watching its embryo develop – that every pregnancy was a fast-forward replay of millions of years of evolution.

It was also wrong. Or rather, it was a dramatic oversimplification. Modern developmental biology has shown that while embryos of related species do share certain features (which reflects their common ancestry), development is not a linear replay of evolutionary history. Embryos do not pass through the adult forms of ancestors. They share developmental pathways because they inherited the same genetic toolkit, not because they are reliving the past.

The Embryo Drawings Scandal

The controversy deepened when critics accused Haeckel of doctoring his embryo illustrations to make different species look more similar than they actually are. The accusation was first made in the 1870s by his colleague Wilhelm His, and it has been repeated ever since.

Were the drawings faked? The answer is complicated. Haeckel certainly idealized his illustrations. He selected specimens that supported his theory and downplayed differences between species. In some cases, he used the same woodcut to represent embryos of different species, labeling them differently – a practice he later admitted and defended as justified by the similarities involved.

By modern standards, this is unacceptable. Scientific illustration demands accuracy, and selectively presenting evidence to support a theory is a form of bias that undermines trust. But it is worth noting that Haeckel was working in an era when the line between illustration and interpretation was drawn differently than it is today, and that many of his contemporaries engaged in similar practices without attracting the same criticism.

The deeper problem was not the drawings themselves but the theory they were meant to support. The biogenetic law was too neat, too grand, too reductive. Biology is messier than Haeckel wanted it to be. And yet, buried within his overstatement, there was a genuine insight: embryonic development does carry traces of evolutionary history. Evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo), one of the most exciting fields in modern biology, explores exactly this relationship – but with far more nuance and far better data than Haeckel had.

Popularizer, Philosopher, Problem

Haeckel’s popular books were enormously successful. The Natural History of Creation (1868) went through multiple editions and was translated into dozens of languages. The Riddle of the Universe (1899) sold over half a million copies in Germany alone. He was, by the turn of the century, one of the most widely read scientists in the world.

He used this platform not just to promote Darwinism but to advance his own philosophical agenda – a monist worldview that rejected the separation of matter and spirit, denied the existence of a personal God, and proposed that evolution itself provided all the meaning and beauty that humans had traditionally sought in religion.

This made him a hero to secularists and freethinkers, and a villain to the churches. It also made Darwin uncomfortable. Darwin was cautious about the religious implications of his theory and preferred to let the science speak for itself. Haeckel was anything but cautious. He used evolutionary theory as a battering ram against organized religion, and he was not above overstating his scientific case to score philosophical points.

There is also a darker element to Haeckel’s legacy. Some of his writings on human racial hierarchies, which he framed in evolutionary terms, were later appropriated by eugenicists and, ultimately, by Nazi ideologues. Haeckel himself died in 1919, long before the Nazi era, and scholars debate the extent to which his ideas genuinely influenced Nazi racial theory versus being selectively cherry-picked. But the connection exists, and it is part of why Haeckel remains a controversial figure.

The Complex Legacy

So how should we think about Ernst Haeckel? He was not a fraud, despite what some accounts suggest. He was a genuine scientist who made real contributions to biology – particularly in marine zoology, where his classification of thousands of species stands as solid work. He was also a gifted communicator who brought evolutionary ideas to millions of readers who would never have encountered them otherwise.

But he was also a man who let his theoretical convictions run ahead of his evidence. He idealized his data, overstated his conclusions, and promoted a grand unified theory of life that turned out to be far too simple. He is a reminder that passion for a theory, even a correct one, can lead a scientist astray.

Darwin understood this. In his careful, hedging, endlessly qualified prose, Darwin built an argument that has survived 160 years of scrutiny. Kronecker Wallis’s handcrafted edition of On the Origin of Species reveals just how measured and precise Darwin’s argument was – every sentence weighed, every objection anticipated. It is a masterclass in scientific writing.

Haeckel’s writing was the opposite: bold, declarative, visually stunning, and sometimes wrong. Both approaches have their place. Science needs its careful empiricists and its passionate visionaries. The trouble starts when the visionary forgets to check the data.

The Thread That Connects

For all his flaws, Haeckel belongs in the story of how we came to understand life on Earth. He connected Darwin’s theory to a broader visual and philosophical tradition. He showed that evolution was not just a British idea but a universal principle with implications for every culture and every field of knowledge. And his illustrations – whatever their occasional liberties – opened millions of eyes to the beauty and strangeness of the living world.

That tradition of making science visible, of insisting that the visual dimension of scientific knowledge matters, runs through the entire history of science. From Humboldt’s botanical illustrations to Haeckel’s radiolaria plates, from Euclid’s geometric diagrams to Newton’s optical experiments, the best scientists have always known that seeing is part of understanding. Haeckel saw more clearly than most. He also imagined more freely than the evidence sometimes warranted. Both qualities made him who he was – Darwin’s most brilliant, most frustrating, and most unforgettable champion.
